Vienna Museum
Competition
In order to open up the Wien Museum more to its surroundings, it will be placed on a wooden pedestal, the parapets of the first floor will be demolished and replaced by high glazing that can be opened up, thus opening up the facade more all around, similar to a temple.
At Karlsplatz, the apron will be freed from visual barriers and, by means of skylights of the new exhibition spaces below, a zone will be created that will draw in the museum.
The landscape of the park develops fluidly into the museum entrance. Skylights are placed in the alignment of the historic façade openings in the forecourt and mediate between the organic nature of the square design and the geometric rigor of the existing building. This preliminary zone is intended to cast a spell over the museum. The museum building thus becomes part of the park.
Furthermore, the old building will be exposed as a pavilion by demolishing the additions between the museum and the Winterthur building. The latter can be raised analogously to the connecting building on the opposite side of the Karlskirche in order to strengthen the pavilion character of the museum.
